Dariusz Popiela

Dariusz Popiela is amazing. Using what he calls his "modest sporting career" (he is an Olympic Kayaker) to draw attention to Jews who were murdered in various places in Poland, he created an organization called, "People, not Numbers." This organization seeks, when memorializing Jews murdered in a particular place, to name the victims whenever possible. I spent the whole day with him, including a visit to a school where the kids followed him around like he was the Pied Piper! Dariusz is a unique individual with a lot of energy and a huge heart.
Dariusz jest niesamowitą osobą. Wykorzystując swoje „skromne osiągnięcia sportowe” – jak je sam nazywa (a jest olimpijczykiem, mistrzem kajakarstwa górskiego), by mówić o Żydach zamordowanych w różnych miejscach Polski, stworzył projekt o nazwie „Ludzie, nie liczby”. W ramach projektu podejmuje starania o przywracanie imion i nazwisk żydowskim ofiarom upamiętnianym w konkretnych miejscach Polski. Spędziłam z Dariuszem cały dzień. Udaliśmy się też z wizytą do jednej ze szkół, której uczniowie chodzili za nim wszędzie zupełnie jakby był Flecistą z Hameln! Dariusz jest wyjątkowym człowiekiem o wielkim sercu i ogromnych pokładach energii.
Bio
People, Not Numbers, created by Olympian Dariusz Popiela in 2018, is a project whose aim is to individually commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. Dariusz is an eight-time Polish kayaking champion and two-time vice European champion from 2017 and 2019. To date, People, Not Numbers has successfully honored the victims of Krościenko and Grybów. Dariusz is now working in Czarny Dunajec to bring back the memory of both the local Jewish community and the prisoners of a nearby labor camp who were murdered in the Holocaust. The idea behind the projects is to represent and communicate the scale of the Shoah by listing all the victims by name as well as age to broaden people’s awareness of the tragedy of those who perished. As a result, the nameless victims previously known under the general term, “Jews” have become individual people again. The foundation has commemorated over 2000 victims by name.
"Ludzie, nie liczby” to inicjatywa imiennego upamiętniania ofiar Zagłady, której twórcą jest Dariusz Popiela – olimpijczyk, 8 krotny mistrz polski i dwukrotny wicemistrz Europy z 2017 i 2019 roku. W 2018 założył Fundację Rodziny Popielów Centrum. W ubiegłych latach w ramach projektu upamiętniono imiennie ofiary Zagłady w Krościenku oraz w Grybowie. Aktualnie trwają pracę w Czarnym Dunajcu, gdzie zostaną upamiętnieni żydowscy mieszkańcy Czarnego Dunajca i okolic, a także ofiary miejscowego obozu pracy. Zgodnie z ideą przyświecającą organizatorom, unaocznienie skali Zagłady przez wypisanie imienia, nazwiska i wieku ofiar powoduje, że ludzie stają się bardziej świadomi tragicznej historii i więcej w nich empatii wobec losów zamordowanych. W rezultacie projektu anonimowe ofiary, które dotychczas określane były ogólnym hasłem „Żydzi” lub liczbą, stają się bliższe, odzyskują indywidualność. Fundacja upamiętniła imiennie już ponad 2000 ofiar.
