Zbigniew Wieczorek

Zbysiek is an extremely warm person who is deeply engaged in Jewish remembrance. I was moved by his description of the remembrance ceremony he does with his students every year, in which they read the names of those who were imprisoned in the Radom ghetto. He describes forgetting about the Holocaust in Poland as a "Crime against Memory." After our conversation he showed me the Jewish cemetery in Radom (whose caretaker is Roma) and we went out to a delightful lunch at an Italian restaurant with the translator and the videographer.
Zbyszek jest niezwykle ciepłą osobą, człowiekiem głęboko oddanym ratowaniu pamięci o społeczności żydowskiej. Ze wzruszeniem słuchałam, kiedy opisywał obchody upamiętniające, organizowane co roku przez niego i jego uczniów, podczas których odczytywane są nazwiska mieszkańców radomskiego getta. Zbyszek uważa, że niepodtrzymywanie pamięci o Zagładzie polskich Żydów jest swoistą „Zbrodnią przeciw Pamięci”. Po rozmowie ze mną, Zbyszek zaprowadził mnie na cmentarz żydowski w Radomiu (opiekuje się nim osoba pochodzenia romskiego), a potem zabrał mnie, naszą tłumaczkę oraz kamerzystę na wyśmienity obiad do włoskiej restauracji.
Bio
For over thirty years Zbigniew Wieczorek has taught Polish and Culture Studies at the Jan Kochanowski Secondary School no. 6 in Radom. He has spent a dozen or so years restoring the memory of Radom’s pre-war Jewish community, including that of the students and teachers of the “Przyjaciół Wiedzy” High School. Zbysiek initiated the creation of both the Jewish Memorial Route in Radom and the Polish version of The Book of Radom (Yizkor Book). He is also the creator of the series of events called “Początek Księgi…” remembering the Jewish citizens of Radom murdered during the war.
Zbigniew Wieczorek od ponad 30 lat jest nauczycielem języka polskiego i wiedzy o kulturze w VI Liceum im. Jana Kochanowskiego w Radomiu, a od kilkunastu lat przywraca pamięć o żydowskiej społeczności przedwojennego miasta w tym o uczniach i nauczycielach Gimnazjum Towarzystwa „Przyjaciół Wiedzy”. Z jego inicjatywy powstał Szlak Pamięci Radomskich Żydów oraz przygotowano polską edycję „Księgi Radomia”. Jest twórcą serii happeningów pt. „Początek Księgi…” przypominających zamordowanych w czasie wojny żydowskich obywateli Radomia.

“It’s a crime against memory and, in fact, we are trying to cope with the trauma caused by this crime right now. So it is not only the problem of the Holocaust itself that we have to tackle—meaning to somehow make contemporary people become aware of it—but also this crime against memory.”
